Revenge trading is opening a trade not because your setup appeared, but because you want the money you just lost back. It usually comes with bigger size, worse entries and no stop. In a prop challenge, with a fixed daily loss limit, one revenge sequence can end an account in minutes.
The warning signs
- You open a trade within a few minutes of closing a loss.
- Your next position is bigger than your normal size.
- You move or remove your stop 'just this once'.
- You switch to an instrument you do not normally trade because 'it is moving'.
- You feel heat, frustration or the need to 'fix' the day.
Why it happens
Losses hurt about twice as much as equal gains feel good. After a loss, the brain looks for the fastest way to remove the pain, and the fastest way looks like an immediate win. The market does not care about your last trade, but your nervous system does.
A 5-rule system
- Fixed risk: every trade risks the same % of equity, decided before the session.
- Two-loss rule: after two losing trades in a day, the platform is closed.
- Cool-down: after any loss, wait 15 minutes before the next entry.
- Written setups: if it is not on your list, you do not trade it.
- Daily stop: at half of the daily loss limit, you stop for the day.
What to do instead
Log the loss in your journal: setup, entry, exit, emotion. Ask one question: did I follow my plan? If yes, the loss was a cost of doing business. If no, the lesson is the rule you broke, not the money. Then walk away from the screen.
