Risk of ruin is the probability that a sequence of losses takes your account to the point where you cannot continue. In a prop challenge, 'ruin' is not zero: it is the daily loss limit or the maximum loss. With an 8% maximum loss, ruin arrives much sooner than with a personal account you can top up.
Losing streaks are normal
With a 50% win rate, the probability of at least one streak of 6 losses in 100 trades is high, above 50%. With a 40% win rate, streaks of 8 or more become likely. These are not bad luck events: they are the expected behaviour of a normal strategy.
How many losses can you survive?
- Risk 2% per trade: 4 losses = -8%. Maximum loss on the 2-Step reached.
- Risk 1% per trade: 8 losses = about -8%. Survivable only if you stop daily.
- Risk 0.5% per trade: 16 losses = about -8%. Survives almost any normal streak.
- Risk 0.25% per trade: 32 losses. Very safe, but the target takes longer.
Two things follow. First, at 2% you are one ordinary streak from failing. Second, the daily limit (4% on the 2-Step) also caps how many losses fit into a single day: two at 2%, four at 1%, eight at 0.5%.
The sweet spot for challenges
For most traders, 0.5–1% per trade balances speed and survival. With an average win of 1.5–2R, a 10% target needs roughly 7–10 net winners at 1% or 14–20 at 0.5%. That fits comfortably in 30 days.
Reducing risk after losses
A simple rule makes ruin much less likely: after a drawdown of 3%, halve your risk per trade until you recover half of it. Your account shrinks more slowly when you are wrong and recovers normally when you are right again.
