How the CL lot size is calculated
Position size = risk in dollars ÷ (stop distance × value per unit). On CL, one tick is worth $10.00 per contract, so a 0.2 points stop costs $200.00 per contract. $1,500 ÷ $200.00 = 7 contracts (rounded down to the 1 step).
Spread and commission add a little to the real cost of each trade, so many traders round down further.
The $150K rules in CL points
Rules are set in dollars, but you watch the CL chart. This is how far price can move against a 7-contract position before each limit is reached:
- Futures: target $9,000 (1.29 points), daily loss $3,000 (0.43 points), max loss $4,500 trailing (0.64 points), all with 7 contracts.
- At 1% risk per trade it takes 2 losing trades in a single day to hit the Futures daily limit.
Maximum CL position size on $150K
Futures: up to 15 contracts
When CL moves most
Weekly inventory data (Wednesday, 10:30 New York time), OPEC decisions and geopolitical news. Size down around those moments: wider swings mean a wider stop, and a wider stop with the same risk means fewer contracts.
