How to choose a prop firm: a 10-point checklist

Price is only one line. Rules, payout conditions, platform, support and transparency decide whether a prop firm suits you. A checklist to compare any firm.

By the Axora Funded Research Team

There are hundreds of prop firms, and many look similar on their pricing page. The differences are in the details: how the limits are calculated, when you can withdraw and what happens when something goes wrong. Use this checklist on any firm, including us.

The checklist

  • 1. Daily loss: percentage, and is it measured on balance or equity? When does it reset?
  • 2. Maximum loss: static or trailing? Does it lock at some point?
  • 3. Profit target and time limit for each phase.
  • 4. Consistency rules: is there a best-day limit to pass or to withdraw?
  • 5. News and weekend rules: what is allowed and what is not?
  • 6. Payout conditions: first payout timing, frequency, minimums, buffers.
  • 7. Payout methods and speed: bank, card, crypto? Can you see proof?
  • 8. Platform: does it work for your markets and devices? Is there a free trial?
  • 9. Support: can you reach a person quickly, in your language?
  • 10. Transparency: are all rules written in one place, with examples?

Red flags

  • Rules that are vague or only explained in a chat.
  • Very high profit splits combined with very strict hidden payout conditions.
  • No clear refund policy.
  • Pressure tactics like countdown timers that reset every visit.

Match the firm to your style

A swing trader needs weekend holding or a programme without a weekend close. A scalper needs low costs and fast execution. A part-time trader may prefer no time limit. There is no 'best' prop firm, only the best fit for how you trade.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most important rule to check?

How the daily loss limit is calculated. Equity-based limits with a daily reference behave very differently from balance-based ones.

Is a higher profit split always better?

Not if the payout conditions make it hard to withdraw. Compare split and payout rules together.
