How the USDCAD lot size is calculated
Position size = risk in dollars ÷ (stop distance × value per unit). On USDCAD, one pip is worth $7.07 per standard lot, so a 20 pips stop costs $141.46 per lot. $500 ÷ $141.46 = 3.53 lots (rounded down to the 0.01 step).
Spread and commission add a little to the real cost of each trade, so many traders round down further. Calculated at the current USDCAD price of 1.41386.
The $50K rules in USDCAD price moves
Rules are set in dollars, but you watch the USDCAD chart. This is how far price can move against a 3.53-lot position before each limit is reached:
- Classic: target $5,000 (200.3 pips) + $2,500 (100.1 pips), daily loss $2,000 (80.1 pips), max loss $4,000 (160.2 pips), all with 3.53 lots.
- At 1% risk per trade it takes 4 losing trades in a single day to hit the Classic daily limit.
- 1-Step: target $5,000 (200.3 pips), daily loss $1,500 (60.1 pips), max loss $3,000 trailing (120.2 pips), all with 3.53 lots.
- At 1% risk per trade it takes 3 losing trades in a single day to hit the 1-Step daily limit.
- Ascent: target $2,500 (100.1 pips) + $2,500 (100.1 pips) + $2,500 (100.1 pips), daily loss $1,500 (60.1 pips), max loss $3,000 (120.2 pips), all with 3.53 lots.
- At 1% risk per trade it takes 3 losing trades in a single day to hit the Ascent daily limit.
- Spark: target $4,000 (160.2 pips), daily loss $1,000 (40.1 pips), max loss $2,000 (80.1 pips), all with 3.53 lots.
- At 1% risk per trade it takes 2 losing trades in a single day to hit the Spark daily limit.
Maximum USDCAD position size on $50K
With 1:100 leverage one lot needs about $1,000 of margin, so a $50K account could open about 50 lots in total. That is a margin ceiling, not a target: the daily loss limit is the real constraint.
When USDCAD moves most
Most active in the New York session; Canadian and US employment data are released at the same time, often causing large moves. Size down around those moments: wider swings mean a wider stop, and a wider stop with the same risk means fewer lots.
