How the XAUUSD lot size is calculated
Position size = risk in dollars ÷ (stop distance × value per unit). On XAUUSD, one $0.01 is worth $1.00 per standard lot, so a $10 stop costs $1,000.00 per lot. $1,000 ÷ $1,000.00 = 1 lot (rounded down to the 0.01 step).
Spread and commission add a little to the real cost of each trade, so many traders round down further. Calculated at the current XAUUSD price of 4,164.275.
The $100K rules in XAUUSD price moves
Rules are set in dollars, but you watch the XAUUSD chart. This is how far price can move against a 1-lot position before each limit is reached:
- Classic: target $10,000 ($100) + $5,000 ($50), daily loss $4,000 ($40), max loss $8,000 ($80), all with 1 lot.
- At 1% risk per trade it takes 4 losing trades in a single day to hit the Classic daily limit.
- 1-Step: target $10,000 ($100), daily loss $3,000 ($30), max loss $6,000 trailing ($60), all with 1 lot.
- At 1% risk per trade it takes 3 losing trades in a single day to hit the 1-Step daily limit.
- Ascent: target $5,000 ($50) + $5,000 ($50) + $5,000 ($50), daily loss $3,000 ($30), max loss $6,000 ($60), all with 1 lot.
- At 1% risk per trade it takes 3 losing trades in a single day to hit the Ascent daily limit.
- Spark: target $8,000 ($80), daily loss $2,000 ($20), max loss $4,000 ($40), all with 1 lot.
- At 1% risk per trade it takes 2 losing trades in a single day to hit the Spark daily limit.
Maximum XAUUSD position size on $100K
With 1:30 leverage one lot needs about $13,881 of margin, so a $100K account could open about 7.2 lots in total. That is a margin ceiling, not a target: the daily loss limit is the real constraint.
When XAUUSD moves most
The London open, the New York open and US data (CPI, NFP, FOMC) concentrate most of gold’s daily range. Size down around those moments: wider swings mean a wider stop, and a wider stop with the same risk means fewer lots.
